I send a PDF document of a personalised thank you note (with my scanned signature on it) by email. That way, you get the best of both worlds! I've had some great feedback with it as well... |

A thank-you note is one of the "academic" formalities of the interviewing process. You should send one because it's usually expected and often included as sort of a check-off item on the company's list of your qualifications. However, no matter how well it's written, it's almost never enough to throw you over the top if the interviewer(s) wish to select another candidate.
Another point to make is that I no longer EVER receive rejection letters in the mail after interviewing. Even though I send thank-you notes by email, I always have to contact the HR people again -- either by phone or email -- after their stated decision-making times to find out their decisions. They always say something like, "Oh...I meant to get back with you, but...". I guess in this economy, they don't have to care.
