In Reply To: I am half way through a 16 month, concentrated MBA program. I am mid 30's so I have several years of successful business mgt. experience. However, this has been in several jobs in a short time. Should I or can I expect to land a decent job before my MBA degree is completed? or should I sit back and work the retail hourly job I have? Thoughts?
Message: You need to get on top of things, and approach your situation as if it's the most important thing you have done or will ever do, because it is! This job market is intense to say the least, it is simply not for the docile, timid, or any other adjective you can muster up. What you need to do, should have been doing from day one is working with career development office on what companies are looking for that recruite at your campus, i.e., types of classes you should take, experience they are looking for, and types of positions they normally offer to graduates of your MBA program; you need to get in touch with alumni and find out where they work, if it's in the industry your interested in, try and setup an informal information gathering meeting, i.e., find out how they procured there current job, what openings they might know of that are not known to the general public yet, and any other relevant advice they can give; attend seminars given by firms in the industry your interested in. Noticed i haven't said anything about job boards, company websites, classifieds, postings, etc... because in today's competitive job market you need an edge, something that allows you to demonstrate your unique qualities and break away from the banality of being a recent MBA holder. Sorry for the harsh, reality check but times have changed and will continue to change! It's quite simply "Survival of the proactivists"
