..first I would definitely go with a skirted suit rather than a pants suit, unless it is -10 degrees outside (and even then, if you can make it into a bathroom to change clothes, wear the skirt!!)
You can certainly wear a colorful scarf in lieu of those silly bow-tied scarves of the 80's.
As for suit colors, I would stick with navy and dark gray(this goes for men, too! I think black makes you look like a funeral parlor employee). Nude stockings, one that match your skin tone, are important.
I also would recommend subtle jewelry (no huge dangling earrings; instead, try small diamond or pearl studs).

..wearing light makeup (that is, foundation, some powder, light blush, lipstick, and mascara) usually looks better than a bare face.
Also, the skirt should cover the knees, though avoid wearing one that's so long you like like an Amish woman who's escaped.
