The suit should be dark - blue or black; a fine (very fine, almost neglible) pinstripe is OK as well.
The shirt should be white or medium blue; button down preferably. You can take some risks with a tie but nothing over the top so leave the Tabasco or Looney Tunes themed ties at home.
Dark (read: black) socks and black shoes; the shoes should be shined just prior to the interview.
make sure that everything fits well, if you look slovenly or unkempt you've blown your first impression and you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Besides clothes - make sure your hair is combed, breath is fresh, and you are generally clean.
Also, and this applies mostly to the frat brats, leave the bravado at the door. There were so many candidates that looked good on paper and five minutes into the interview blew it because they thought I would buy into their self serving bs. Be confident and assertive not cocky and arrogant.
There endeth the sermon.

I suspect that almost everyone reading this board knows the answer to the male interview attire question.
Anyone willing to tackle the female interview suit question?
(No she's not interviewing for a secretarial position. Let's assume she has an Ivy League degree or two and her resume is good enough to beat out Mr. Clueless Frat Boy. She might even have an MBA from HBS, but then she'd probably know the answer to this question.)
Obvious answers: A conservative blue or black suit. Fleshtone stockings, black shoes. Tasteful, yet understated, makeup and jewelry. Simple white shirt.
These answers leave many more questions:
What is conservative?
One button jacket or jacket that buttons up to the neck?
Skirt (below the knee) or pants?
What kind of shirt (if it's not hidden by buttons up to the neck)?
What kind of black shoes?
Can anyone be more specific about appropriate makeup and jewelry?
And the most difficult question: Now that those silly bow ties are out, is there any female equivalent to the "neck tie dash of color and personality?"
For a woman wearing a black suit white shirt, is any color ok in an interview?
Tasteful scarf or jewelry at the neck? Lapel pin?
