In Reply To: The suit should be dark - blue or black; a fine (very fine, almost neglible) pinstripe is OK as well. The shirt should be white or medium blue; button down preferably. You can take some risks with a tie but nothing over the top so leave the Tabasco or Looney Tunes themed ties at home. Dark (read: black) socks and black shoes; the shoes should be shined just prior to the interview. make sure that everything fits well, if you look slovenly or unkempt you've blown your first impression and you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Besides clothes - make sure your hair is combed, breath is fresh, and you are generally clean. Also, and this applies mostly to the frat brats, leave the bravado at the door. There were so many candidates that looked good on paper and five minutes into the interview blew it because they thought I would buy into their self serving bs. Be confident and assertive not cocky and arrogant. There endeth the sermon. Yazbro (imparting 25-years of business experience to whoever wants to listen)
Message: Yazbro hits it right on the head. I would recommend the book "Dress for Success" by John Malloy (?). The book is a very good reference that not only tells you what to wear but, what to avoid (possibly more important) and tells you why. Generally however, there is no way to be too conservative in your thinking (unless the position is an artistic one, then all bets are off)... The assumption of your question is that you are applying for a business position. I have been to a number of job fairs and the stunning thing is that 80% of the applicants have no idea how to dress, ignore some element of personal hygene or do not think either is important. Kind of makes one wonder about the term "professional" on occasion. Dressing properly is one of the most important things to do correctly. The last thing you want is the interviewer to focus on the fact that you are a slob or that your clothes fit poorly. You want them totally focused on your resume and who you are. Take the clothing or hygene aspect out of the equation. If you are a larger person, you must take even more care to dress the part. Neat, conservative, clean, well taylored. Oh, as a side note, most (read this as almost all) people cannot wear off the shelf clothing. It has to be taylored a bit to insure a good fit. Suck it up and spend the extra $50 to make the suit fit and look right. You would rather spend a little less on the suit and taylor it properly than a lot on a suit that doesn't quite fit right. Most Men's Warehouse or Men's Superstore provide this service. Use it. Uh, now I must depart my soapbox. Remember, make your clothing a non-issue by doing it right.
