As an HR director with over 20 years of interviewing, I can tell you that I personally pay no attention to thank you notes. I would say that approximately 50% of the candidates I see send thank you notes. (This can be up to 20 a week - argh.) I agree that it could be viewed as a pleasant courtesy but I find them irritating & self serving. I have never hired anyone because of a thank you note, nor have I NOT hired someone because I didn't receive one. Too cute by far in my opinion. |

As a director of operations, I can tell you that any job search you conduct should include HR in a minimum capacity, and thank you letters ARE an absolute must.
Gatekeepers will do just that, and from this response you should get an idea of who you are dealing with. Thank you's can be viewed as how you treat others in your day to day lives- the same will be used to judge your merit by the hiring manager, which is much more important than HR. I am sure that many readers can empathize with the utter social ineptitude of representatives of human resources departments, and hope that you will all understand the political necessities.
Perhaps your attention to detail and follow up will go un-noticed, however I can personally attest to passing on a candidate based on their lack of a thank you follow up. Keep in mind, HR does not make final decisions, and based on this reckless comment, do you see why?
