In addition to demonstrating good manners and emphasizing your qualifications, it gives you the opportunity to revisit a question that, during the interview, you may not have answered as well as you would have liked. You can bring up the question in the letter, and include the additional information to give a more complete or accurate response than what was given during the interview.
It could help tip the scale in your favor, in a situation where the interviewer might be on the fence regarding yoru candidacy.
