I met a placement agency consultant at a job fair. He went through my resume and saw a red flag. He said I should list the most recent job first as the employer will get an unfavorable impression that I'm currently unemployed and result in an instant ding.
My current resume looks like this (for illustration only):
Goldman Sachs, Analyst, 2000-2002
Merrill Lynch, Broker, 1999-2000
XYZ Enterprise, self-employed, 2002-Present
I like the brand name firms come first as the no name "XYZ" part doesn't carry much weight and doesn't grab the reader's attention. Who's right? Thanks! |

Without a doubt the placement agency consultant is right. I understand your inclination to doing that, but it is simply not the proper form.
However, in your cover letter you can, and should, highlight those brand name firms.
