CollegeCareerAdvisor,
I'm in the same situation as RoxQ, other than a lot of companies did not want to pursue with an interview or an offer because of my sponsorship (work permit) requirement. I graduated cum laude and had internships at ML and a petroleum company in Africa. The only company that has accepted to sponsor me is for a stockbroker position while I'm really interested in IB and Research. I'm thinking about taking the stockbroker job just to get my foot in the door. Any advice? Do you know anything about the sponsorship thing?
Thx. |

Versus,
Unfortunately many students and grads that are on work visas (F-1, H1-B or the like) are hitting a brick wall. Many employers do not feel that they need to go through the trouble. I know, the cost is on your shoulders but many employers lost many of their experienced employees that were on visas after 9/11. It have become VERY difficult to get H1-B's renewed.
I advise students and grads to contact their embassy and/or consult to obtain a list of companies from your home country that do business in the US and US companies that do business in your home country. They are much more likely to hire you and be able to use any language skills you might have.
If you do take the position as a stockbroker give it all your effort and start networking to try to eventually get into the research side of things. But be sure that is possible. Many stockbrokers are purely sales people and there is no analysis or "advising" so do your research.
Happy Hunting!
