In Reply To: Hi: It's been a while since I have interviewed. I wanted to find out how to obtain references for potential employers. I know in the past, you are to come to an interview with a list of 3 references. Although I want to include my current manager as a reference, I feel as though once I ask my manager for a reference, he may start to look negatively towards me since I am looking elsewhere for a job. Also, if I dont get the job, then I feel like my relationship with my manager would be ruined. What should I do? How should I approach people about references without causing a bad feeling on either side? Also, I am not sure if my company has a policy concerning employees used as reference. They may just have an HR representative disclose just the date of hire and salary. If this is the case, then I feel as though I wont have any references to disclose...??? HELP! Jobia
Message: You are under no obligation to give your current manager (or anyone at your current employer) as a reference. Anyone interviewing you will understand that you don't want them to know you are looking. References do not have to be former supervisors, either. I have often used as references people who once worked under my supervision, or as peers. If you are being considered for a managerial post it can be useful to have refs from people whom you once supervised. Your prospective employer doesn't want to hire you only to find that everyone underneath you quits because you are a lousy manager.
