Hi:
It's been a while since I have interviewed. I wanted to find out how to obtain references for potential employers. I know in the past, you are to come to an interview with a list of 3 references. Although I want to include my current manager as a reference, I feel as though once I ask my manager for a reference, he may start to look negatively towards me since I am looking elsewhere for a job. Also, if I dont get the job, then I feel like my relationship with my manager would be ruined. What should I do? How should I approach people about references without causing a bad feeling on either side? Also, I am not sure if my company has a policy concerning employees used as reference. They may just have an HR representative disclose just the date of hire and salary. If this is the case, then I feel as though I wont have any references to disclose...???
HELP!

Most of the notes posted make snes; some of it depends on what your current and hoped-for positions are. You certainly ought to be able to find two or three people who are not your current supervisor, and you can always offer your supervisor later - depending on the pressure you feel at the time. If they are unreasonable, even suspicious, about your resistance to giving out your current supervisor's name, you should also ask yourself if that is where you really want to work, too. But you should be able to defer all of these problems until after your first interview or meeting with the prospective new employer. Good luck!
