In Reply To: Hi: It's been a while since I have interviewed. I wanted to find out how to obtain references for potential employers. I know in the past, you are to come to an interview with a list of 3 references. Although I want to include my current manager as a reference, I feel as though once I ask my manager for a reference, he may start to look negatively towards me since I am looking elsewhere for a job. Also, if I dont get the job, then I feel like my relationship with my manager would be ruined. What should I do? How should I approach people about references without causing a bad feeling on either side? Also, I am not sure if my company has a policy concerning employees used as reference. They may just have an HR representative disclose just the date of hire and salary. If this is the case, then I feel as though I wont have any references to disclose...??? HELP! Jobia
Message: Jobia, The best thing to do is NOT give references to any potential new employer until they are prepared to offer you a position. You can easily negotiate with the new employer, and let them know that since you are currently employed, there is obvious sensitivity around providing a reference from your current employer. They will understand. If they insist on references before extending an offer, you can always provide references from others (excluding your current employer). You should not be expected to provide a reference from your current employer until the new one is prepared to offer you a job. Good luck!
