Hi:
It's been a while since I have interviewed. I wanted to find out how to obtain references for potential employers. I know in the past, you are to come to an interview with a list of 3 references. Although I want to include my current manager as a reference, I feel as though once I ask my manager for a reference, he may start to look negatively towards me since I am looking elsewhere for a job. Also, if I dont get the job, then I feel like my relationship with my manager would be ruined. What should I do? How should I approach people about references without causing a bad feeling on either side? Also, I am not sure if my company has a policy concerning employees used as reference. They may just have an HR representative disclose just the date of hire and salary. If this is the case, then I feel as though I wont have any references to disclose...???
HELP!

Nearly all of the companies that I have interviewed with over the years have no specific requirements about references. They are nearly all satisfied to contact current or former coworkers. You must have at least a few friends that you work with or used to work with that you can trust enough to be a reference. Make sure you coach them on what to say after they agree to speak on your behalf. Also give them a heads-up just before the prospective employer calls them so they can get ready.
I have found that only a minority of prospective employers specify that the references must be current or former managers that supervised you. This can be tough if you are currently working and you don't want to make them aware that you are looking. Sometimes you can get the prospective employer to agree not to call your manager references until after you accept their job offer. If that is not possible, and you parted on good terms with previous employers, you can call up some of the managers you worked for in the past to ask them to be a reference.
