In Reply To: I'm looking for a job and feel like the online application process and resume submission is pretty futile. I get the impression that people generally snag interviews by knowing people at the company they??d like to get an interview at. Unfortunately, I haven??t been much of a networker. My friends aren??t in my industry (software development) and can??t help me out much. So how does one get a good job without knowing having good contacts?
Message: the best way to get a job is by knowing someone with connections to the hiring manager. Your impressions are largely correct: going through the application process is generally like pushing a rope up hill. It can be very frustrating, fruitless, and extremely time consuming. Even if you get an interview (or series of interviews) you can often be rejected, even if you wow all of your interviewers, simply because someone on top never met you and they want to put someone in the job that they know or who was recommended by a crony. Networking takes a lot of time and energy. You have to be outgoing, emotionally mature, and extremely secure and confident about yourself to be a good networker. You have to have the ability to give people what they want (help, advice, ego gratification) while getting what you need in the process. The best way to get started is to join organizations where you can meet a lot of young captains of industry and other movers and shakers in your industry. They have to have repeated exposure to you over a significant period of time to trust you and let you into their inner circle. Good places to network are at your local Rotary Club, Toastmasters, country club, and high profile fund raising events.
