I'm a big fan of expensive fitted pants in conservative colors (black, gray, khaki, navy, stone) paired with a fitted (not skin tight, not low cut), occassionally button down, top and (if the top is sleeveless) cardigan. Recently I've picked up a few tweed and boucle blazers and ponchos to add for the fall. Generally the style can be "casual" and trendy if it looks expensive and neat. A trendy shirt from Forever 21 will look less professional than a similar looking trendy shirt from BCBG. Open toed shoes are okay where I work, but I didn't wear them the first week just to make sure. I get my stuff at Ann Taylor, Benetton, Banana Republic, BCBG, Express, and Bloomingdales and will sometimes pair a conservative pair of pants and shoes with a funkier top from somewhere like Arden B. No one really wears suits where I work, even casual suits.
The level of casual really depends really on where you work and the industry and your position. Best to err on being too dressy in the beginning.
