In Reply To: I'm an embedded software engineer in western NY area looking to move to the No.Va area and try to get a job with one of the big defense contractors such as Lockheed. I graduated from a top-20 engineering school with good GPA a year and half ago and have about a year and half of experience as I'm still working at my current job. I recently got my security clearance with DoD. My question is: How easy/difficult do you think for me to land a job in the area at either entry level or level 2? What could I do to make myself more marketable in that area? Will myself being out of the state hurt my chances dramatically? Finally, this is probably a trivial one, would I need to do anything for my secret clearance to "transfer" or since the DoD has all my info, do I not need to do anything? Looks like I have all the credentials that the local companies want but I'm still hearing that the job market is terrible in that area. And I'm reading things about how many companies don't really consider out-of-towners. As I haven't really paid much attention to the job market the past year and half, I'm starting my research now. I like my current job, my boss, and the company but I feel I'm a little under-compensated and my family lives in the No.Va area. Any suggestions/comments are greatly appreciated.
Message: You shouldn't have any problems getting a job in the northern VA area, as long as you have a car. And the only thing about being out of state is what the other person said - they won't move you. Your DOD clearance will move with you. Job market isn't as great as it once was, but software engineers are still in high demand, especially if you're flexible.
