My family and I recently moved to another state. We needed to buy stuff for our new house. Virtually everything we bought (from rolller shade brackets to small appliances) was made in China!
A few weeks ago, I went to McDonalds for breakfast. Most of the counter people were replaced with computer screens! Customers simply walk up to a screen (which talks in unbroken English), place their order, pay with a credit card, and pick up their stuff when it's ready. Apparently, McDonalds cannot even afford to pay Mexicans to take orders anymore.
A few months ago, I was getting daily telemarketing calls from a major credit card company. Although the callers had American first names (Bob, Sue, Jim), they all had a deep Indian accent. I finally found out that they were calling me from India! What, at 21% interest, the credit card company can't afford to hire some Americans to do their bidding?!
I am just a lowly engineer, not a bean counter expert on the economy, but I am beginning to get a little worried. If this trend continues, where will we all work to get the money to keep our economy going?
