Message: Response rate all depends on your skills, background, experience, and the types of jobs you are looking for. I have an engineering degree with over twenty years of experience in design and management. I have been looking for upper-level management jobs in manufacturing companies. In my case, I get about 50 telephone interviews for every 100 resumes sent out. These are usually initial screenings conducted by recruiters. These interviews usually lead to about 20 to 30 telephone interviews by HR, hiring managers, and others at the companies themselves. Out of those, I get maybe 10 face-to-face interviews. After sending out hundreds of resumes for about the last 18 months, I have gotten many interviews, but only one job offer. The one offer was insulting, as it was well below what I was making in my last job and it did not include perks promised by HR during the interview. The moral to the story: just because you are getting a high response rate to your resumes and a good number of interviews, don't get too excited. I've found that employers are not very serious about filling jobs and they are just window shopping until the economy picks up and/or the "perfect candidate" comes around. I cannot tell you how much time and money I've wasted on dead-end interviews. What you should really ask is: How many acceptable job offers did you get out of every 100 resumes submitted?!
