I live in northern VA and presently work in maryland as a software engineer for Lockheed Martin. I went to school in the D.C. area and I can say that most of the companies around here focus on systems or software engineering for government contracts, whether it's DoD or other government organizations. If you already have a DoD clearance you should be in demand wherever you go. Being an "out of towner" shouldn't be an issue either, I work with a ton of people from schools up north.
One thing to be aware of though is the traffic is ridiculous. I actually have family in Connecticut and was wondering what the engineering market is like up there.
