I'm thinking about relocating to the bigger cities like NYC, Chicago, etc. for better job opportunities. Do most employers out there tend to hire locally first? Can an out of state address on my resume really hurt my chances on getting interviews? You know a lot of companies out there are still on cost cutting mode and can't afford to fly people over for interviews or give relocating allowances, etc. Any thoughts? |

Hi! I moved to LA with an internship program through UNC and am currently looking for a job. I can tell you the market is tough but having the gumption to move to a new place combined with the glory of a UNC degree is very attractive to a lot of employers. I have gotten many offers just off of that, but I'm being extremely specific about the job I take (I was lucky enough to find a temporary job to pay the bills until I can find the career I want/need). So my advice is: decide whether you want to move and whether you are going to request relocation compensation. Most companies will gladly hire someone as long as they do not have to pay for them to move--good luck!
