In Reply To: CONTD from part 1 first, i have better faith in IT systems, having worked at IBM for 9 years...i know what is possible, and indeed already working to track far more data than 290 million residents... we only need to track the workforce: 142 million. you may not agree, but IBM is the best IT company overall. (how they treat employees... different issue.) iow, IBM could track the data i'm suggesting. i say fed bureaucracy prevents simplicity in the labor department. second, i have better faith in the federal government based upon how they now track data (other than unemployed) one good example is this: USDA tracks movements of +12 "species" of mammals, birds, and fish in order to locate the origins of a disease outbreak. their goal in place to detect "disease" within 48 hours, as opposed to 1 week, is mid year 2005. far more complex than tracking unemployed... been to "wheresgeorge.com"? they track dollar bills by serial number... eurobilltracker.com is the counter part across the pond. these very simple examples are ways in which data can be captured to show stats 'like' the unemployment rate. now, i'm gathering you've never been laid off... (?) this was my first time, so i know how the NYSDOL site works. option of phone in, or log in each week. this data is tracked, and i rec'v a weekly check. at week 26, i'll see whether or not they allow me to continue submitting my SS# even though i won't rec'v a check. won't know until that first try in oct. --end--
Message: Assuming we make every college report who attends (and I??m sure people like you would have no problem with the government tracking this and would never write about it on your blogs) I still do not understand how you plan to be able to tell the difference between ??fired?? ??quit?? ??retired early?? and ??discouraged?? (etc etc) since they will normally receive unemployment benefits yet will stop reporting income on their SS#. I also don??t understand how you are going to keep track of people that are eligible after they stop receiving unemployment benefits. If they decide not to go back to work (retire early, become housewives, etc) are they just going to be counted as unemployed until they reach 65? I think your faith in IT systems is too high. You mentioned GNP (GDP is what is normally talked about now) and if I would trust a similar method to track it. Not only would I trust it, it??s what happens. Did you really think they (are able to) track $10+ trillion (that??s 10,000,000,000,000+) worth of final goods and services? Likewise the trade numbers you mentioned are done by sampling. You can find the details at bea.gov. Can you post links to articles about how the USDA tracks these animals? I??m willing to wager that unless they are endangers (and therefore there aren??t many of them) they are tracked (and tested for disease) by using a sampling of the population. I don??t think you really understand how much statistics is used in our lives and how difficult things would be to obtain exact numbers for. Yes, I??ve been to ??wheresgeorge??. People have to enter the data they don??t track dollar bills automatically. They also don??t track every single dollar bill they only track a few and only when someone decides to enter it, many don??t. Are you now suggesting that everyone in the country should have to call the government and tell them if they are working or not? I also don??t know what you hope to accomplish by telling the government you are still unemployed. Haven??t we established that it has nothing to do with the unemployment rate? Which leads me to my final question: since I think I have shown throughout this thread that your article is extremely inaccurate do you plan to still leave it on your site? If so how do you justify it? ??I don??t like the way the government collects data so I??m going to lie about how they, the EU, and the LATs does it???
