the white house doesn't have to fix the numbers... people fall off automatically after 26 weeks. so everyone laid off prior to the first of this year, and who are still "unemployed" are no longer counted, unless they continue filing for non-paid unemployement benefits only to keep themselves counted.
that is all i'm saying really. if the number crunchers in DC were really interested in the true number of unemployed they could capture this data. :) this way of counting unemployed is how we've done it all along. the EU countries count real unemployed, people do not fall off the stats until they find a job.
as i've said, the los angeles times is keeping track of the actual numbers, but only publish the information in january of each year. i'm sure it takes a lot of resources to produce the data. how they do it, i do not know. they claim 16 million out of work for 2003, or twice the number of the labor department. |
