Topic Name: The "Did I get the job?" question
Message Name: What do you guys think?

In Reply To: In my last job interview, I asked the HR person what my chances of getting hired were. She responded saying that she and other HR execs didn't like that question because it puts them on the spot; whereas I, like that question because it puts HR execs on the spot. She said I shouldn't ask it so I let the point slide. A few days later, I was speaking with my sister and she told me that her company will not hire you unless you ask if you will get the job. One main difference may have been that I was interviewing with a trading firmn and she works in Sales for a large corporation, but I was wondering what people on the board thought about it. (By the way, I ended up getting the job so the question couldn't have hurt me too much.)
Message: Of course you should ask if you got the job!!!! It is perfectly fine to do so, and who cares if they don't like the question.....because you really do want to know don't you otherwise you would never have applied nor would you even be asking the question. This HR person sounds as if they do not know exactly HOW to handle people! I am sure if they gave a bit more THOUGHT to it they could come up with a BETTER WAY of dealing with employees or potential employees. It doesn't matter what type of job you are applying for....you still want to know otherwise what is the use of applying for the job in the first place? The HR person should be able to be more tactful by saying something like this, "Thank you for asking, but I can not tell you right now because the decision has not been made yet..but as soon as it is made I will let you know..". Is this so hard to do or what? Duuuhhhh.....
