In Reply To: I thought Chicago (especially the downtown area) is more of a business / finance city like NYC with big employers like Bank One, etc. and also the Chicago Exchange. Am I missing something?
Message: Chicago has a lot of banks and the Board of Trade, but it's bread and butter was manufacturing and heavy industry. The economy will eventually peter out if it entirely relies on trading money, pushing paper, and warehousing/selling foreign-made goods. In the last few years, many of the vendors that I had been dealing with were either switching production over to Asia or Mexico or they were complaining how they couldn't compete against the ones who had already done so. Manufacturing jobs were at one time very easy to come by here, but they have virtually dried up. When you think about it, what incentive is there to keep it here?
