In Reply To: I recall reading an article along very similar lines in the NY Times back in '02, citing that the unemployed were no longer counted once their benefits ran out. I'll admit I don't know anything about continuing to file "for the record" i.e., to be counted; I just stopped claiming once I knew I was no longer entitled. At any rate, the Times estimated that true unemployment was double-digit at best, so I'm not surprised by the 9.6 or 9.8% figures from the LA Times. BTW - this thread is ASTOUNDING. I was out of work Nov. '01 through April '03, and what I'm reading here nowadays casts the job market in as dark or even darker light than bak in '02! The media and the Bush administration are lying to the public big-time about "economic recovery" every time a few sales pick up. Claims that "X percent of businesses plan to hire in the next quarter" come and go, but, from what I've been seeing - and living through - it just isn't happening.
Message: Man, I never realized the truth! George Bush is the reason why none of you people have jobs. He somehow managed to magically make it so that his billionaire friends could earn profits without employees! Isn't that amazing? Even more amazing is that George Bush was able to start this recession way back in 2000 while he was a state governor! I never realized texas was so big. When I get laid off, I will be sure to blame the president, because it must be his fault. Then, I will complain about how H1-Bs and outsourcing are taking every job in the USA. Since every job is either tech support, software development, or clerical reconciliation, it must be true. Those indians are stealing our country!
