In Reply To: This is someone who you do not want to work for. After 20+ years in the trenchesI can "smell" the bad ones even if they are in an area I know nothing about. If he's the hiring manager then he IS HR. This is a toad - you need a company that has professionalism. I concur run the other way and be thankful. Sometimes what you wish for may not be what's best for you.
Message: If the hiring manager is the person you would have been reporting to, then you probably would have been miserable in the position anyway. In *my* opinion, in terms of overall job satisfaction, having a good relationship with your manager can be as important as enjoying the work itself. Don't beat yourself up over the stammering incident. Since this person seemed like a lost cause anyway, consider it "practice" for tough situations like that. If you're frequently attending networking events, you may run into other hiring managers, and now you have an experience to learn from.
