In Reply To: The other day, I went in for a 3rd interview to meet with another of the managers who I'd be working with. The person that I had interviewed with the first and second times brought me in and asked me about what I was looking for in salary, and I gave a vague response, at the high end of the salary range posted for the job. He asked if I was flexible based on a "probationary" time period, to be reopened in 6 months. I said, "I'm flexible", and then he said "I'm going to talk to the CFO and see what we can do" - then he left. Then, the second interviewer came in and asked again what I was interested in, in terms of salary and I gave the same response. He told me that I was one of 3 finalists and that I was asking for the most - but that the other interviewer liked me the best. He said that the more flexible I was, the better my chances of getting the position. Then, he left. The first interviewer (the one who liked me the best) then came back in to speak with me. He said that he talked to the CFO and that they could come up with something that should suit my needs. Then, he told me that he wanted to hire me and that he wanted me to start on Tuesday! He told me that he would be getting back to me with salary information, etc. later that same day. That was 2 days ago. I called his office yesterday, and left him a message, but I haven't heard anything. What does this mean? Do I have the job? Do I assume that they didn't want to negotiate salary with me and they moved on to another candidate? I'm really confused, and I don't know whether to move on, or get ready for work on Tuesday. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Message: Congrats on coming this far. How big is this company? It sounds like rather small company and they do operate somewhat unconventionally. That said, I see couple of probs. 1st, this "flexible probation" salary doesn't sound right. I never heard of such. Why not bring you in as temp instead then? Fact that these guys are so "tight" with money would be the biggest red light here. Can these guys even meet payroll next week? That strapped for cash? 2nd, lack of professional curtesy to let you know in writing is troublesome. You called them yet nothing. How dearly do you want a job in this company?
