In Reply To: The one headhunter I met with offered to pay the fee in 25% increments. 25% upfront 25% in 45 days 25% when I was hired 25% after 2 months of work He was upfront and told me everything to expect. We would meet every 2 weeks and such. This "headhunter" was the president of his own firm and the fee was quoted at $3,000. I am in the financial services field, so rates vary but this might give you an idea to negotiate. If they are really convinced that they can get you hired and you are not trying cheat them from a fee, I think you can negotiate in good faith with the decision maker. Some of the headhunter firms get paid 2 ways, from the client and from you. I did not hire this headhunter because I didn't want to spend the money as I was unemployed at the time, but I do feel he is a reputable and stand up person. The job market is getting better, the most important piece of information is you must have a positive attitude. This will carry you through when you think you cannot take anymore.

It is illegal in most states to take a fee from both parties. You sure you're talking about a so-called "headhunter"? Don't "headhunters" hunt for heads? And, since recruiters recruit; the person must have been something else. Like: career counselor, career marketer, career coach.
