In Reply To: if you're asked to pay thousands for entry into the "hidden job market" or a "personalized career assessment" or "resume blasting" to 10,000 recruiters or a professional "resume enhancement" or a ... chances are you can find these services for a lot a LOT less. many of these firms work just like diet pills and hair tonics, preying on the desperate. do a search on google, it will open your eyes
Message: Lots of frustrated people who think they're career coaches like to give the public the benefit of their UNINformed opinions about job hunting. If you read something by someone who isn't a professional career coach or something related; be aware their opinons were probably formed because they're mad they can't afford the help they need or else they had totally unrealistic expectations or maybe they heard what they wanted to hear, and ignored the contract they signed, or maybe they weren't very marketable to begin with and when the perfect job didn't come their way quick enough, they hit the keyboard to file complaints. (the more aggressive ones may even have filed lawsuits). If the opinion giver doesn't have to take responsibility for his/her advice, then you should BEWARE of it. These same folks have a peculiar notion of fairness: they only tell one side of the story. And, when they are busy trashing professional career firms, they usually do so by talking about complaints as though they weren't "just" a complaint. Any fool can file a complaint, regardles of whether it has any merit or not. And, they don't use logic in their reasoning, they use a crude form of "if this, then this" argument. "IF it's a service for job hunters, then it MUST be a scam to take money away from desperate people." You know; like doctors, lawyers, EMPLOYERS, churches, Web sites, malls, car dealers, the transit agency...there's nothing you can say that will ever satisfy these kind of people. Their goal isn't truth or even to be helpful. Their goal is to destroy what THEY can't have. Just like all those insecure folks who cause problems whenever the little lady doesn't want to have anything more to do with them. Think O.J. Simpson.
