In Reply To: I have had several jobs over the past few years. It started off by getting laid off back in 2001, which then resulted in all of 2002 job jumping and scraping to get by. At the beginning of 2003 I landed a job in a bank branch. Needless to say my manager was brutally difficult to deal with and over my 8 months on the job she fired 3 people and continually "wrote up" for discipline action countless others. She was brutal to work for and after one day of her giving me a hard time I went to HR and word got back to her and I was terminated. I went through company procedure to get my job back, but to no avail and have also put in complaints with state and federal groups. Anyway, how do i explain to an employer the reason I left my last job? That's a big problem. Thanks
Message: Legally, they cannot say anything except for your position and dates of employment, etc. Also, if this manager was creating such chaos, she will most likely be the next one to go. If you had good relations with your coworkers, you can use these as a reference. They will understand your situation and should be eager to help, especially, if they went through the same hell. If you didn't work there that long, leave it off your resume. Also, over the years, I've tried to keep my education up by attending night classes. Several times I've quit and just told prospective employers that I've been unemployed because I've been focusing on studies. This shows employers that although you may not have had a job, you have been doing something constructive. When the economy is bad, sometimes it's better just to go to school full-time and pick up odd jobs. This is a lot less frustrating than staying in a position that is untolerable.
