In Reply To: Hey all. After graduating with a Masters in Finance, I joined a large European Bank as Managemement Trainee. I stayed there for 2 years and worked in Corporate Finance and Investment Banking. after 2 years, I left to join PwC GRMS Group. Instead of doing Financial Risk Management (what they had promised), I ended up doing Audit Support. Hating it, I left after 3 months and joined a start up created by the Belgian government (I live in Brussels) as Corporate Finance Officer. the job seemed fantastic, but I soon found out that government moves very, very slowly, and things are on hold at the moment, so I don't have much to do. I have only been here for a month, but am already slowly looking at other opportunities. How would a recruiter look at this? Bad luck? Unstable? Never happy? I don't really know how to "defend" such a volatile short career, and am scared it might prevent me from landing a job in the future. Any feedback or previous experiences with jobhopping?
Message: This *appears* to be a great experience and resume building type of position, IF you can hold on for at least a year. Experience much shorter than that represents no value to you, really. That said, in the states, there is now an expectation that you will job hop. it becomes more and more dangerous to sit still and nearly everyone recognizes this. I've hopped Alot. in my opinion, having lots of top flight companies on the resume is more marketable than gradually climbing the ranks at one. ask yourself this: Are you impressed by people who sit at a hated job that is unfullfilling? You are the most mobile early in your career, so hop away. But, be careful about burning an bridges, or leaving any promises unmet. Also, while looking for that great job, understand that all work sucks to a degree! As an example, my brother was recognized as the earliest senior vp at a large financial services company, at the age of 33. He is no longer there, shortly after took a CMO job with a competitor. He worked for about 5 companies in route.
