In Reply To: Help! I have a call-back interview this Friday to meet the CEO/Chariman for this extremely competitove position. My problem is, I haven't told them that I am 4-month pregnant (for fear of losing my chance)... What is the common courtesy in the workplace for this very sensitive issue? Would they feel cheated and lied to if I wait until they made the offer to me? Will they rescind the offer if they find out? I know employers are not suppose to FIRE people for being pregnant, but they can certainly decide not to HIRE someone who is right? Please, any advise on this issue will be appreciated! I really am at my wits end as to when and what to say when I break the news to them....
Message: First of all congratulations on your bundle of joy! This exact situation happened to me. I went through several one-on-one interviews, then a panel and aced all. At the end, I said that I was 4 mos. pregnant (not showing), and that I was serious about my career, that I could add value by XYZ, and that I had day care established already and a strong support network for backup. I didn't get the job. Turns out that the person I'd be replacing had just returned from maternity leave (which was a generous 26 weeks) and you can imagaine they didn't want to replace the replacement all over again. They hired a man. Although it was a great job and I know the fit was perfect, but I do not regret telling the truth. I addressed the business issues I felt were important to an employer (my dedication, daycare) and in the end it is their decision anyhow. Whatever you do, you have to be comfortable with it, so that in the wee hours of the morning when you are rocking your baby to sleep you can live with your decision and be able to concentrate on the baby without regrets. Good luck.
