Backoffice means a support role. Not client-facing. for example, the accounting, H/R or IT departments.
When people talk about Investment Banking or Commercial Banking at JPM, they are referring to front-office or client facing roles such as client coverage teams or products such as leveraged finance, equities, M&A, derivatives, etc.
