In Reply To: Thanks RGardens for all your insights and suggestions. To further elaborate my work experience in Financial Services has been in the following areas: Retail banking sales, Project Management and Portfolio Management (financial planning and sales) I am trying to make a switch into commercial/corporate banking. I have a MBA with a specialization in finance but ALL commercial banks that I have applied to require credit experience or a bank training program. Robert Morris publications are only avaliable to Members and have to be working with a bank or a finance company to be eligible for membership. I am extremely committed to a career in Corporate banking. I would like to be in NYC but am not very location specific. Thanks again.
Message: The key issue you face is how you make a switch from one "discipline" to another. Particularly, when the desired discipline is perceived as requiring specialized training and skills. Training which is generally given to new hires/analysts. If you are using headhunters, then I'm afraid this is pretty much a lost cause. They don't usually place entry level positions (one path for you) and don't want to get involved in low probability places (trying a lateral move). So, what do you do? What are your options? It's not clear to me if you work in a bank. If you do, then you have to speak to your "HRA partner" or make a personal contact with folks in your bank's credit area to make your own opportunity. If you don't work in a bank, then you have to (a) get the training on your own or (b) apply for an analyst position. So, how do you get training on your own? NY Institute of Finance 3 week intensive program $9k. I think they may have night classes at a slower pace. Shesunoff offers credit training too (over the internet). These courses (and I suspect there are also other offerings) will give you a credential as opposed to undocumented home schooling. That should smooth your path. As it gives the all important credential, but also demonstrates your "aggessive" resolve to work in credit. Other options to get training and experience are the indirect route ... What are some of these firms? Rating agencies CIT GE Capital Other asset based or specialty lenders. You earn your spurs here and then move into a bank.
