I too am aiming for M&A from the MO. I was contemplating trying to apply internally for the BIM program - i am not too sure whether it is similar to the 3 yr ops program as it is only for 2 years.
EuroOps did you join in the September intake?
(1)I was also afraid that the BIM program would only lead me onto more Ops, and seeing as I could do whatever the grads on that program are doing anyway (rotate every 9 mths or so, and do the same work). But what I was unsure about was that whether I would become an Associate like those on the BIM program after 2 years.... does anyone know?
(2) Also, does the firm treat you more like you will become 'a future leader' (in T&O) if you were on that program as opposed to someone who is not?
(3) Should my next career move be from a more client facing role to a front office facing role within MO? Given the overwhelming impossibility of going straight to M&A as an analyst, without a top tier uni on my cv (though, my grades are just as good, as are my extra curriculars and PT work exp.) However the FO facing role mainly faces traders and legal, and it is not what I am aiming for.
(4) How useful are the mentors that you can assign yourself via the intranet?
(5) I have also been looking at MBAs and masters in finance like EuroOps... what does FO make of the ISMA (or ICMA) centre?
WIsh you all a happy new year! |

Hey
Well, I'll be joining JPMC's BIM programme in 2006. I guess it doesn't really matter where you start off in the firm, given the meritocratic culture as conveyed to me by the HR personnel, as everyone is given a fair chance to prove his mettle.
(1) As far as my handbook is concerned, career progression is in my own hands. There is no set time limit by which I'll be promoted unless I fulfill the required competences as validated by my superiors. The average tenure for an analyst before he's promoted to an Associate is around 2 years I think.
(2) Can't answer this one. Needs more of an insider's insight.
(3) You know, personally, I feel that Ops personnel are given as much relevant client-relationship training as the guys at M&A. I guess it goes back to what RGarden said about rebranding oneself if you wish to break out of Ops.
(4) Another insider question...
(5) Not really sure of this myself. I have been looking at MBA programmes - American vs European. Given that I wish to work in NYC eventually, I've kinda narrowed my MBA unis to either Columbia or NYU Stern. Columbia has this shortened 15 mths full-time MBA programme that is comparable, in terms of length, to London Business School. Time is of key essence for me as I do not wish to spend anymore time on studies than on gaining practical work experience. I would appreciate if someone could advice on shortened FULL-TIME MBA programmes like the one at Columbia without an internship option. I would like to know if not doing an internship would jeopardise my chances of getting an eventual full-time job at a leading IB?
Thanks again guys!
