1. Lots of people have left broker/dealers to join a hedge fund. Since I've been a buysider all my career, I personally don't think bankers make really great investment managers. But that's me. The fact is, hedge funds hire lots of people from investment banks.
2. It depends heavily not whether you're working for a bank, BUT what exactly you're doing for them.
3. I would advise you to figure out what you want to do. Then get the nearest approximation of that that you can find.
4. I don't know about you, but MLIM manages well over $150 billion dollars. If you don't consider that real, fine, but I certainly do. Join the best organization you can and leave other strategic questions for later.

Again, I really appreciate, your insight is great, and apologize for the mispelling/misgrammar. Anyway, I don't meant benkers, I meant sellsiders. Bottomline, I would like in the future to join a global macro/top down hedge fund. what do you suggest to get there? Since it seems to me impossible to get there directly, but am I wrong? (I am a senior in Italy, with an exchange in a US top 10, internship at BB equity research london). Do you thin that I need a MS/Phd in econ to go to a top-down HF? I thought this routes:
1 the best: strategy, but is impossible to get in bc there are 4 strategists per bank, so very few openings
2 somewhere in fixed income.
I did an internship in equity research but was is as bottom up as possible. Some people were former consultants: I thought what the hell am I doing with biz consultants!
-do you think that if I join a startup HF in Italy then no way to get soon in the US?
-I used the word real in the meaning of pure-player, never meant to offend MLIM. However, even if I know much less than you, I don't think you should judge an asset manager by its size. Otherwise, Deutche would be better than goldman or MS. When I use the word better I mean from an employee prospective. I have heart bad rap about MLIM from IB insiders, i.e. they are allegedly mostly long-only, take too many before oulling the trigger, and so on, but I would like to listen to other people
