I would say it helps, perhaps opens a few doors for you. But I wouldn't rely on it too much. It does show you are motivated, which is good. Without research experience and in the current market, it's an uphill battle to say the least (not that you don't know this already). Once you do get your CFA designation, however, you are much better positioned, and perhaps the job market is better a year from now...
One approach would be to position yourself as knowledgeable in the industry you DO have experience in. Research depts do hire people from industry, it is a very credible path. Without your background, though, it's hard to tell if this advice helps you. |

I have been trying to break into Research for the last year and a half. I recently passed Level II and have two masters' degree ( engineering and MBA and over 7 yrs of industrial experience). However with no IM experience you are facing an uphill task. Just passing the exam is not gonna help. You need to come up with your own investment ideas and develop your reports based on whom you are sending it to -buy-side or sell-side. Even then, with the market being what it is, there are tons of Research guys with experience and no jobs willing to work for a lot less than before. So there.. not trying to discourage.. but u gotta work real hard... and network real hard. I still have not got anything.. but I am not giving up yet...Good luck!!
