I was thinking about registering for the CFA exam in 2003 but I am worried about not getting the job experience to qualify for the designation. I would hate to pass all three levels and have my time expire due to no applicable job experience. If I understand correctly to qualify a person must be making investment decisions 50% of the time. I have a current opportunity in the back office (It sucks but its a shitty market) but I know that apples and oranges when comparing the skill sets. Can AIMR help a person who is passing tests get into a position so he can eventually qualify for the CFA. If I sign up I would wait until I complete level 2 before trying appeal for an opportunity to gain the necessary experience.
Any comments advice is welcomed?
Thanks

Passing level one could lead to you getting considered for a job you wouldn't have been considered for otherwise. I passed L1 before I had any applicable experience and used that achievement to get hired for an analyst position now have almost three years experience. I find it highly unlikely that if you intend to pass the CFA program you won't at some time find the ability to get a job in the industry. Just keep trying.
