I would say it helps, perhaps opens a few doors for you. But I wouldn't rely on it too much. It does show you are motivated, which is good. Without research experience and in the current market, it's an uphill battle to say the least (not that you don't know this already). Once you do get your CFA designation, however, you are much better positioned, and perhaps the job market is better a year from now...
One approach would be to position yourself as knowledgeable in the industry you DO have experience in. Research depts do hire people from industry, it is a very credible path. Without your background, though, it's hard to tell if this advice helps you.
