you're a pm and you're asking what the salary ranges are? wouldn't asking your bosses or friends be a better idea?

I'm not sure that I trust my employers' pay ranges, and as I've moved up internally I don't have accurate comparisons.
Most of my friends are i-bankers, not asset managers.
I also thought this would be a good place to get some honest estimates, and to see what different types of employers (hedge funds, insurance co., mutual funds) pay.
