daddydave has some good points but consider this. It sounds like you are planning to go back to B school. If so your decision to specialize or be a generalist isn't as important. I would find out what happened to other people who worked for this analyst ended up doing. If he is good to work for he may have given them a lift up. Some analysts both generalist and specialist have a habit of lifting up their associates. I would find the analyst that has the most successful associates and work for him. Usually analysts whose associates have gone on to do great things are also good to work for. Alghouth as daddydave suggests specialists do sometimes move to new industries, they also get pigen holed. As a genralist you may see many industries and find one that you really like. Once you do that then you can be more focused and move into an industry. If your intention is to do two years then go to Bschool I would be a generalist.
