don't buy them all through the AIMR website. you can get some of them cheaper shopping around and buying some of them used. (watch the edition #s though.) when i bought them, it was actually cheaper for me to get some of them shipped from amazon.co.uk to the US than buy them through AIMR. half.com will also have some.
if you never pass level 3, you don't get the right to claim being a CFA charterholder, which would be looked upon a bit askance. however, you can always studay and take the test again. still, i'd find a study group near you and intend to pass all three--assume quitting is not an option. AIMR's website has a candidacy self-assessment test.

buy the study guides, Schweser is on of the better ones. The books are just too much, the study guides break it down to what you need to know for the tests, The people that I've met that have failed the test are generally the ones that try to read everything. These books are like 100-200 or so, I think,
