Actually, I'm pretty flexible.
Is this considered as interesting and rewarding financially as a standard buy-side job? Or is separate account management more like a place to cut your teeth before joining a big fund?

It's all the same really. You can have similar positions and responsibilites as an analyst, manager, strategist, whatever. Many fund companies have mutual funds and sep accts that are managed in the same style and by the same team - MFS, Strong, Alliance, Oppenheimer, Lord Abbett. And there are many other sep acct managers that are not in the mutual fund business - Lazard, Rittenhouse, 1838, Nicholas Applegate.
I don't think one is better or worse than the other. It just depends on what you're looking for, size of the company, reputation, etc.
