Sep accts are investment pools (similar to mutual funds) for both individual + institutional investors. Sep accts have higher minimum investments, typically $100k-$250k through retail systems like Salomon or Merrill, can be $10m or more for institutional clients. Investors also own the actual securities in the portfolio, wheteher they be bonds, stocks, or other; where mutual fund investors own shares in the fund.
Many fund companies offer sep accts as well, more cachet in the sep acct business. There are also innumerable private managers that you will probably never hear about.

Thanks for your reply!
Actually, I'm pretty flexible.
Is this considered as interesting and rewarding financially as a standard buy-side job? Or is separate account management more like a place to cut your teeth before joining a big fund?
