Message: I am a recent reader of this board and find the information quite helpful. Below are my details. I would appreciate some feedback from people like ag and others who are experienced in this field. Education: BS, MS, Ph.D; - all in Materials Science & Engineering. Experience: 2 years as an engineer in an Iron & Steel plant in an asian country; 2 years as an engineer at an auto component manufacturing firm in Detroit. For last 6 years, employed in Semiconductor industry as an engineer/physicist in Texas. Current activities relate to Integrated Circuit manufacturing/Development etc. - Recently started part-time MBA program from a 2nd tier Business School. Will graduate in 2003. Did a thorough survey of my interests/abilities and values and came up with two possible career choices. Either IM or Management consulting. However, I am more inclined towrads IM as it allows one to have some perosnal life compared to consulting (in my opinion). So the question is, given the details above, how difficult/easy it is to break into this field? Where does one start (level-wise). It seems to me that Research Associate will be the place to start which will ultimately lead to PM role. I do have keen interest in finance, specially the investing side of it and love mathematics/modeling. In fact Mathematics has been my minor throughout all my degrees. By the way current salary is ~ 80K and of course no bonus etc. So first of all, what are the chances of getting into this field, in which role does one start, compensation wise will I have to take some cut etc. etc. I would really appreciate some frank advice here from experts. Thanks DPSP6
