In Reply To: I am trying to decide which school to go to, both in terms of job recruiting and grad school admission. Which is more appealing to recruiters? (assuming I get an econ degree from either) Does it matter? Rationale?
Message: Aside to the general public: Pomona College and Claremont McKenna, along with Harvey Mudd, Scripps, Pitzer and several graduate schools are all located on a contiguous campus in Claremont, California. Thus, students get the best of being on a medium-sized campus (total student population is roughly 6,000) but also going to a distinctive and very small school. My thoughts: I attended a lot of classes at CMC, so I think I have a fairly good insight into both schools. In terms of academic quality, both schools are top-notch, but Pomona has a bit of an edge in terms of academic quality. Obviously, I'm somewhat biased having gone to one over the other. In terms of job placement, CMC is superior to Pomona. But Pomona is no slouch either. You should be aware that the recruiting programs have now been combined and are 5-campus wide. So, there's no recruiting opportunity that a CMC student gets that a Pomona student doesn't and vice-versa (or Mudders or Scrippsies or Pitzerites). I would say that the schools are so close in terms of objective criteria that if I were somebody facing your decision, I would visit both campuses and make my decision according to my personal feel of each school. In my time, the food was better at CMC though (and the cafeteria was nicer). In the end, a lot of things are shared between the colleges (newspaper, libraries, sports teams, some clubs, lots of classes, etc.). I had a class in philosophy that was taught by a Pomona professor (in a Pomona building) but also cross-listed at the graduate school, where I was the only Pomona student along with 15 grad students, 1 CMC student, 2 Scripps students and a Pitzer student. The theater department is 5-college. The sciences for CMC, Scripps and Pitzer are all combined (Pomona and Mudd have seperate science departments) In my logic class there were at least 5 Mudd math majors. So....... I hope that helps. alex
