In Reply To: Hi Howard, while I don't have direct IR experience, before going back to school I worked at two top investment banks (in equity derivative risk management). So I have a good understanding of the markets, particularly derivatives, CDOs, etc. I know a lot of people- but I'm not sure I know the right people (no tight relationships with traders at hedge funds or anything). Is that the only way in or how would you advise I go about it? Thanks!
Message: I wish there was a magic formula. The answer is, as with most job searches, networking networking and more netowrking. I would leverage your experience in risk mgmt to identify firms where you may add value in other areas. a quid pro quo. You bring to the table the ability to do more things than the average bear in IR and will be happy to do so while they allow you to sharpen those skills. better off at a smaller shop (think 500MM). Also try to leverage alumni from your bank and school. May want to think about D.E. Shaw or Bridgewater (though obviously not small) Both are adding people and DE in particular consider themselves "an aggregator of talent." Both are pedigree snobs so make sure that you have the scores (GMAT, SAT, GPA etc). Also be prepared to submit a 5-10 page expository writing sample almost immediately
