Other than my biased opinion that philo developed the best analytical skill set due to the strict emphasis on logical reasoning and the fact that some of us could actually understand what some of the philosophers said(i.e. Heideger-one of my favorite examples because he was so difficult to read) but I believe that it prepares us best for writing. I am absolutly appalled at our education system for allowing people to graduate who have poor writing skills. I know that business, science and engineering majors do not have to write much and can pretty much test out of even the freshman year classes(through SAT, AP, or placement scores) but most of them come out of school as nearly inelligible writers. I have personal experience with this: my girlfriend is in a Phd program at a top school in a science related field and she does not remember how to write. She's highly intelligent and said that in high school she was an excellent writer, but for five years of undergrad and masters classes and three years in the field she rarely if ever wrote a thing. Now she's writing up research reports regularly and the profs are telling her that she can not write well. I have to proof everything, and it's true, she can't write well(of course I don't understand too much of what she's writing about, but the general structure and grammar is mediocre at best). The education system, both higher and lower, must address this issue because as people rise in their proffesions, writing becomes more critical. Even the engineer who has risen to management must be able to convey his thoughts on paper.
Now if philo had only taught me to spell. |

I am a senior econ/politics double major.. and I must concur. Mine is certainly not the easiest of routes. I often feel my right and left lobes are at war with each other.. But for all the suffering, the degree has taught me to learn.
Math IS a creative medium. But it requires a different learning/application process than convincing your TA that you know more than he/she does about the short term political consequences of the NAFTA, or that the Republic was itself the Philosopher King's final examination..
At the very least, we of philosophical grounding get more lovin.. (scientific fact)
:P Peace.
