A few of my friends who were business majors and had taken an intro PH course or two were always frightened of philosophy majors who were going into the business world-I think that they read a little Nietzsche or Heidegger(sp?) and figured that our minds were warped enough to take over everything from those who learned by formula(accountants?j/k).
I really agree that Philosophy is the best route to what we do-any job on the Street really-because it is the most highly analytical major available that doesn't pidgeonhole you into a specific mode of analysis. I know that you constantly hear about the well rounded liberal arts education being oh so important today(which is really is) and the PH major allows for the highest amount of analytical, writing, argumentation and interpersonal skills out there within liberal arts. It teaches one how to think for themselves rather than rattle an solution to a problem from something that they read in an HBS case study. Plus, I loved all of my classes-I've been out of school for almost 5 years now and have had jobs ranging from banking to sales to hfunds and nothing came even close to philosophy on an intellectual level. My goal is to make enough money doing this so that I can lead a life of contemplation.
Gotta go, but would love to continue this string as opposed to some of the more assinine ones on the IB board. |

Philosophy is the only major where you learn to write well AND develope analytical skills at the highest level. Every other major, you learn to write well (english, history) or use mathematical / logical tools (math, physics). Of course, some majors do neither (anthropology).
A lot of business/finance majors seem to be illiterate -on top of the fact that they don't know any particular industry well themselves. Plus they tend to see every problem as the nail to which their classroom-gained skills are the only answer.
I tell people all the time that philosophy is the best preparation for this business and they don't believe me.....
The problem for me was (and still is, to some extent) statistical analysis, quant research and (to a lesser extent)financial statement analysis.
Comments from my fellow philos out there?
