In Reply To: Ag-you seem knowledgeable in this field so I'll direct this question to you(and anyone else in the know). I have industry experience in the finance department and biz development at two different 500 co's but would like to get into asset management. I will admit that I've only done a cursory search(i.e. looked on the web) and most of the things that I've found are much more sales/marketing oriented for mutual funds. How do I get to the outside funds managers who actually manage the funds rather than the fund families who are the trustees/fiduciaries(or whatever the term is)? Are hedgefunds a viable alternative? Or should I shoot at money managers who deal with private money, pension funds, etc? Any insight would be helpful.
Message: you're not going to find too many jobs listed on the websites. The buyside community is very networked - we all go to the same conferences all the time. The thing is to get on the inside. How to do that? That's the tough question. One suggestion I have for you is to see if the treasury dept at your firm has any openings. That can provide the in and the networking platform. The main thing is person-to-person networking. You know people who know people who know....... Another main point is that education (defined as where you went to graduate school) is EXTREMELY important. The basic question pms ask (believe it or not) is: did he go to my school? ag
